Can a nutritional supplement be taken after its expiry date? Is this harmful to you?

3 min read

Some athletes take different types of supplements (whey protein, aminos, vitamins, etc.) and cannot maintain their use for long periods and the supplement expires before 50% of its content or less is consumed.

What if I want to continue taking a nutritional supplement after it expires? Is this harmful to you?

Manufacturers of various nutritional supplements place mandatory labels indicating the production and expiration date of the supplement on the supplement’s box, or they write the date on the box. The expiration date of the supplement on it means that this date is the last day that the supplement will be at its most effective. Meaning that this written date guarantees that you will enjoy all the advantages and benefits found in this supplement, and the guarantee ends when the expiration date expires. When the expiration date of a supplement has expired, this does not necessarily mean that continuing to take it will cause you harm, but it means that the efficiency and effectiveness of this supplement may become zero – without benefit.

There are some simple notes that will help you ensure that your whey protein powder is safe to use, even after the expiration date. Therefore, please avoid using a whey protein supplement if you notice the following:

1. Lumps and clumps inside the box
Whey protein (whey or whey) is in the form of a fine, homogeneous powder. If the nutritional supplement package is not tightly closed, or the package is damaged during storage or transportation, it is possible that moisture will seep inside, leading to the formation of clumps in the protein powder. It is known that humidity is a suitable environment for the growth of microbes, so it is best to buy a new package if you find lumps inside the whey protein box.

2. Having a bad smell
Manufacturers add flavor to nutritional supplements to give them a pleasant taste and smell, so avoid using whey protein powder even if it has the slightest musty smell.

3. The taste is unpalatable
If you feel that the taste or flavor of whey protein powder is unpleasant, you should purchase a new container and dispose of the old container.

4. Color
If you find that the color of the powder is wavy (discolored and uneven), or a black/gray pore layer, there is a high possibility that your supplement has been subjected to a bacterial or fungal attack. Please do not use whey protein powder in this case. If you are thinking that drying in the sun will get rid of bacteria and fungi, please do not do so, as microbial exposure may have resulted in gradual breakdown of the amino acid lysine; It may not be harmful but it will not be effective either.

Eliminate nutritional supplements
If a supplement has expired or you do not want to continue taking it, do not empty the contents of the package into the washing basin. Rather, place the package in a plastic bag, close it tightly, and then dispose of it.

There are no harms to taking expired nutritional supplements – taking into account the notes mentioned above – but they may only lose their effectiveness significantly. To avoid this from happening, make sure to buy the supplement when you need it in order to consume it while it is at its highest stage of effectiveness.
